QATAR

Qatar is a peninsula situated halfway along the West Coast of the Arabian Gulf. It has a number of islands, the most important of which are Halool, Shira'aw, Al-Ashat and others. The total land area of Qatar is approximately 11,521 square kilometers. The capital of Qatar is Doha. The population of Qatar amount to 743000 inhabitants according to the initial results of the second stage of the 2004 population census. Arabic is the official language in Qatar, and English is widely spoken.

Qatar is a monarchy ruled by the Emir who assisted by The Advisory Council. It gained independence on September 3rd 1971. On the 27th of June 199 His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani assumed the rule of the State of Qatar supported by the ruling family and the Qatari people.

Formal education in the State of Qatar started in 1952. Since then the comprehensive educational policy has developed on solid bases; adherence to the heritage of the Islamic nation and its moderate character as well as commitment to the development of educational curricula and systems and constantly endeavors to benefit from modem and technological achievements and new educational experiments. To achieve its goals in human development, the government set up a rich program of scholarships for distinguished students. This is a step intended to encourage students to work hard and assert themselves in the rapidly changing world of science and technology.

Qatar Foundation implements a program to extend assistance and provide educational grants to distinguished students admitted to universities in Qatar. I was a lucky student to win a scholarship to pursue my studies in the USA, the country which is pioneering in patents and scientific innovations. I can always boast of being selected by my country to get education in a country that possesses the best educational institutions in the world.

As part of Qatar's focus on education, it established Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development which celebrated the inauguration of the Education City on 11-13 October 2003. An area of 5.5m square meters has been allocated for the development of the Education City. It contains the following universities and establishments; Texas A & M University-Qatar (TAMUQ), Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q), Carnegie-Mellon University, George Town University, Qatar Academy, Virginia Commonwealth University-College of Design in Qatar and Rand-Qatar Policy Institute.

Needless to say, our country is serving its citizens in the best possible way and it is pouring huge resources to develop its human wealth. In return, I believe it is the duty of every citizen to pay back the favor by serving his country well and demonstrate the sense of gratitude by being loyal and putting the common good before the personal one.
